What do bed bugs have to do with marketing and sales?

I hate to admit this, but here it goes...my family had bed bugs. Before you judge our cleanliness, you might want to read further to
understand how education was the reason we chose one extermination company over others, to rid us of those pesky, ancient bugs.

The Discovery

My wife and I discovered bed bugs in our home and we could not have been more disgusted about the small uninvited guest sleeping in our bed. 

My wife noticed two pesky bugs resting on the fabric of our headboard and she quickly navigated to Google. She verified our roommates as bed bugs from pictures online, and we quickly learned far more than we ever imagined. My wife diligently looked over companies from her phone, where she discovered Thrasher Termite and Pest Control's mobile friendly website, in San Diego. 

Why We Chose Thrasher

Garrett Thrasher wrote the book on bed bugs, literally. The website was very informative, the company gave all the details of the how, the what, and why of bed bugs.  We quickly learned that bed bugs like to travel, much like our family. Bed bugs can get into your luggage from hotel rooms, then migrate from your luggage to your home, all without you knowing it happened. This seems to be more common than you might think. While this is not meant to be a lesson on bed bugs, it is a lesson on how to market and sell more of your products and services through the art of teaching.

A Lesson in Marketing and Sales, From a Bugs Life

Teach, train, and give to your target market, and the sales will follow. This was one of my major takeaways from reading 37Signals' book Re-Work, which I was coincidentally finishing when we discovered our guests.  Thrasher educated us on our urgent situation, making it easy for us to pick up the phone and inquire about their services. This resulted in a scheduled appointment, that led to opening our pocketbook to have our entire house tented for under $2,000, effectively ridding us of our house guest. Thrasher Termite and Pest Control were the authority in bed bugs and we learned, we called, we purchased.
